Windows 8.1 just like all previous versions of Windows includes an option for disk cleanup. The disk cleanup utility lets you cleanup unnecessary and unused files from your PC and helps you free up a large amount of space which can be in GB’s several times.

Windows 8 got Disk Cleanup name changed to ‘Cleanup Unnecessary Files on your PC’ but, it could be accessed anytime. But, the disk cleanup option is hidden by default from Search Charm and the ‘All apps’ section of Windows 8.1. Although, the option is hidden, it can be enabled easily and then, it would also start appearing in the Search Charm and ‘All Apps’ section of Start Screen.

If you are one of the people who couldn’t find the disk cleanup in Windows 8.1, the trick below would be helpful for you to enable disk cleanup.

Instructions:

 • First of all, go to Start Screen by pressing the ‘Windows key’ or swiping from right and selecting ‘Start’.

 • Once on Start Screen, open up the ‘Settings’ Charm by pressing ‘Windows key   I’ or swiping from right and selecting ‘Settings’.

 • Your Settings Charm will open. Here press ‘Tiles’.

 • The tiles option in the ‘Settings’ Charm will open. Here move the slider switch named as ‘Show administrative tools’ to right ► (e.g.) turn on position.

 • Now, search for ‘disk cleanup’ by typing while on Start Screen or alternatively, swiping from right and selecting ‘Search’ and then, type ‘disk cleanup’.

 • Now the ‘Disk Cleanup’ option should appear in the Search results
