Chrome users may have noticed that when using the browser on their Windows computers, a small grey bell-like icons appears in the taskbar notification area, on occasions. I use Chrome occasionally and was puzzled to see its appearance.

Google Now notifications is available to Chrome users on their Windows computers. To enable this feature, simply sign in to Chrome with the same Google Account you’re using for Google Now. If you use Google Now on your mobile device, you will be able to see certain Now cards on your desktop computer if you’re signed into Chrome. These include weather, sports scores, commute traffic and event reminders cards.

Disable Google Now notifications

If you wish, you can turn off or disable Google Now notifications. If you wish to temporarily disable these notifications, right-clcik on the icon and select any one of the listed options:

  • Do no disturb

    • Do not disturb for one hour

      • Do not disturb for one day.

To turn off or disable Google Now Cards completely and permanently in Chrome, click on the icon to open the Notifications Center. In the Notifications Center, click the gear icon on the bottom right corner and uncheck the box next to “Google Now”. This will disable the Google Now notifications. But other Chrome notifications may still appear. So if this does not help you,  do the following:

Open your Chrome web browser, type chrome://flags and hit Enter.

Search for Enable Rich Notifications. From the drop-down menu, select Disabled.

Restart Chrome.

You will now no longer see the bell icon or Google Now notifications in your Windows taskbar notification area.

Google may not have given users the choice to decide if they wanted these notifications to appear in the first place itself, but if you have no use for them, using this procedure you can disable these annoying notifications.
