Iris Scanner For Future Windows Phone Devices Confirmed
« on: May 01, 2015, 02:56:27 AM »
Got to love these mildly official confirmations from Microsoft, straight from the show floor at the currently ongoing BUILD 2015 developer conference.

The company announced big plans for the platform at the event, and amongst these announcements to attendees and fans is the confirmation of a previously reported rumor — one that claimed that Microsoft wants to add an iris scanner to one or more Windows Phone handsets.

One or more, as back at that time, only the Lumia 940 flagship was mentioned to be getting this impressive new feature.

But where’s the fun in that, right?

However, the software titan has now confirmed that a selection of devices that launch in the next 12 months will include the iris scanner technology.

This was revealed in a presentation on the Windows Hello technology that the company is currently developing. As stated by Microsoft during the presentation:

Quote
“For facial or iris detection, Windows Hello uses a combination of special hardware and software to accurately verify it is you – not a picture of you or someone trying to impersonate you. The cameras use infrared technology to identify your face or iris and can recognize you in a variety of lighting conditions.”
So far so good.

Obviously, smartphones will not be the only one that are set to make use of this innovative new technology. Iris scanners are set to be available on a few Windows 10 devices too.

Additionally, we can expect a few more handsets, apart from the Lumia 940, to come with it.
