Microsoft Buys SurfacePhone.com Domain
« on: January 28, 2016, 08:28:35 PM »
Our biggest hint that something is coming? The Surface Phone looks set to be the next big thing for the platform, and although under wraps, is still one of the more exciting projects that Microsoft is working on right now.

Behind closed doors, of course.

The company officials have not talked about this device in any tangible capacity, though information continues to arrive indicating that this premium phone is still part of the company’s future plans.

Our latest intel is from a Reddit discussion that reveals the fact that Microsoft is now the owner of the SurfacePhone.com domain — which currently redirects users to the official Surface website.

Now, obviously, a domain name is no confirmation that teams at Redmond are working on the Surface phone, particularly as big companies like Microsoft usually purchase domain names to protect their products from others.

Others that might try to capitalize on the popularity of a given brand.

Microsoft is also the owner of SurfaceCar.com, and that is not a clear indication of anything, really.

In the meantime, fans can rest their hopes on the fact that Microsoft did hint that they needed a Surface equivalent for the Lumia lineup:

“We need some sort of spiritual equivalent on the phone side that doesn’t just feel like it’s a phone for people who love Windows. It’s got to be a phone where it’s like, ‘Wow, that’s a real shock or that’s a real breakthrough, and (for an Apple customer) that’s going to make me pause before I buy my 17th iPhone.’ And we need time to actually go build that.”

These were the words of Chris Capossela, the Chief Marketing Officer at Microsoft.

Anyway, if a Surface Phone does make its debut in 2016, then look for it to launch in the second half of the year. Plenty of time for the rumor mill to churn at full speed.
