Microsoft Revenue Breakdown By Product Line Reveals All
« on: August 06, 2016, 09:44:51 PM »
Microsoft rarely provides clear and coherent information these days about its various business lines and which product brings what amount of revenue and whatnot.

A quarterly earnings report may be with us every 90 days, but it definitely lacks in these key details.

However, the company’s most recent 10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission is here to paint the full picture about the most profitable division at Redmond, and how much revenue does Windows bring in.

Well, for starters, the operating system is not the main source of revenue for Microsoft lately, as that mantel has been taken up by Office.

The productivity suite raked in $23.6 billion in revenue for the fiscal year that ended this June, while the Azure cloud services are not far behind, bringing in $19.2 billion worth of coins for the same period for the company.

Here is a chart that shows the ongoing trend:

Windows had been a gold star product for Microsoft for decades, but it dropped to third place.

This business still brings in $14.7 billion in revenue for Redmond, however back in the good old days, the Windows division accounted for around $18 billion in revenue for Microsoft. That was six years back, but lately it is showing consecutive quarterly declines.

Microsoft may be looking at the cloud for its future success, what with Azure and Office 365, but as the chart above shows, products like Xbox and Bing, gaming and online advertising respectively, are still important for the software titan.
