Microsoft has announced the general availability of Wi-Fi 7 support for enterprise access points. This is a significant leap in wireless networking reaching Windows 11, version 24H2 and later, starting with the September 2025 Windows preview non-security update. Windows 11 already supports Wi-Fi 7 for consumer access points; the new update extends benefits like better speed, high throughput, and improved reliability to enterprise access points for organizations.
The Wi-Fi 7 for enterprise features required WPA-3 Enterprise authentication for greater security. Enforcing WPA3-Enterprise helps eliminate legacy vulnerabilities and sets a new baseline for secure connectivity. The move will help to ensure stronger encryption protocols, resistance to brute-force attacks, and enhanced protection for sensitive data in transit.
Wi-Fi 7 has benefits over previous versions such as support for multi-link operation (MLO), which lets devices use multiple bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or 6 GHz) concurrently to avoid congestion and maintain connectivity. It also adds 320 MHz ultra-wide bandwidth in 6 GHz, which doubles the speed of devices and supports high-bandwidth/low-latency applications like AR/VR. Additionally, 4096-QAM modulation helps increase data transmission by 20% and improves the quality of video streaming and conferencing.
Organizations need to meet four key prerequisites to take advantage of the update. Devices must be on a Wi-Fi 7-capable release (Windows 11 24H2 + September 2025 preview update or later), devices must be equipped with a Wi-Fi 7-capable chipset, organizations need to deploy Wi-Fi 7 Enterprise access points, and certified Windows Wi-Fi 7 drivers must be updated and validated for functionality. Microsoft said these drivers will be ready soon from OEMs and IHVs.
