DIY coolness: a duct tape iPad sleeve and two clever docks

Ahhhh, the refreshing ingenuity of TUAW readers!

Frank Hsueh might have been out of quid after buying his iPad, or he perhaps he just likes the texture of duct tape. As Frank noted in an email to TUAW this morning, he made an iPad sleeve out of nothing but a bubble envelope, duct tape, double-sided tape, and an Apple sticker from an iPod shuffle.

Frank used up his roll of double-sided tape securing the inner bubble padding, so he used the tape core to make an iPad stand. As Frank said, it's "perfect for movie watching or notes typing (with wireless keyboard) in landscape mode."

Another TUAW reader, Wilson Lam, had an even more green solution for an iPad stand -- while he's waiting for a stand from Quirky (http://www.quirky.com/products/30-Cloak), Wilson found that a cardboard cup holder from a fast-food restaurant could be turned into a utilitarian iPad stand.

Do-it-yourself iPad sleeve and docks

1 Actually doesn't look too bad, does it? It has a certain je ne sais quoi, brought about by the use of industrial textiles

2 Frank took an Apple sticker from an iPod shuffle to add that last little piece of authenticity to the sleeve

3 So that your iPad doesn't slip out onto the floor or sidewalk, this sleeve even has a closure

4 Velcro is used to hold the sleeve closed

5 Yes, it's padded. Nice, huh?

6 Nice, considering how inexpensive it is. And it protects while it enhances...

7 The iPad is in the sleeve

What do you do with an empty tape roll?

8 Turn it into an iPad dock, of course

The details

Dock, meet iPad. iPad, meet Dock

10 Beautiful, isn't it? Well, maybe not. But it IS functional.

Wilson Lam's Dock

11 Wilson Lam also used found materials to make his iPad dock. In this case, it was a soft drink cup holder from a fast food restaurant.
