Win 7 Installer Not Working

The installer suddenly stopped responding and unable to install additional programs.  Received error 1601 on one program I was attempting to un-install using Windows un-installer.

I have check the services for Windows Installer and it is running and I have attempted to unregister then re-register it again but nothing fixes this issue.  Have run SFC /scannow but nothing was found or fixed that has corrected this problem.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Microsoft Windows Vista Error 1601 Fix..should work on Win 7 too

1Click on the Windows Start button. In the Windows Start Search box, type the following code: %windir%\system32\msiexec /unregserver, and then press the "Enter" key.

2Next, go back to the Windows Start button and then to the Windows Start Search box and type: %windir%\system32\msiexec /regserver followed by the "Enter" key again.

3Enter your admin password if your system asks for the password (This may not occur). Finally, click on the "Allow" option to finish the process. Attempt to install your application to test if the process worked.

The RTM release of the Windows SDK for Windows 7 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is now available for customers to install from the download center in both ISO and Web Setup format.  See the SDK announcement on the Windows SDK blog.   

Please note that the stand-alone version of the Windows Installer 4.5 SDK is now no longer available for download from the Microsoft download center. Windows Installer SDK has traditionally always been included with the Windows SDK, but during the timeframe for the release of MSI 4.5 redistributable there was no other Windows or Windows update release for simultaneously shipping the SDK.

We encourage you to download and use the latest version of the Windows Installer SDK tools (Windows Installer 5.0) included with the RTM release of Windows SDK for Windows 7.
 

Now if the REGedit suggestion by javajolt did not work, nor the method stated by MS or the new install from microsoft. you only have 1
option left....

insert the DVD for Windows 7 or start from HDD and do a clean install... first I'd make sure the DL edition you are -were using is verified by hashcheck to insure it is 100% complete.
javajolt should be able to provide that info.
Apparently for some reason you original install was not 100% - I suggest this due to Acronis on my edition of Win7 is working 100%. where you stated your edition was not working properly...
Other than that I'm out of suggestions.

Thanks Snuffy,

I think this may have been caused by two drives accidentally with the same OS connected to the system.  Removing the one where the restore did not work correctly seem to fix the problem.

It's been my week-end (long) for continuous issues.  I think this issue was caused by two drives in my system with the same OS (one was actually an attempt to restore the system drive) and I forgot to disconnect the target drive where I never did get a workable image using Acronis True Image Home 2010. That is probably due to something I am doing incorrectly but I've done hundreds in the past years but with never this much trouble.  The installer issue was indeed a weird way for this to show up but that appears to be the fix.  I appreciate your suggestion and will keep this for future reference.

If you remove the working HDD and replace with the other one..(which you assume) is bad, does it boot and work?
It really should.... That is how I make my Failsafe backup HDD.  it the old days that was called a Clone..

I have continued to follow the dialog and will, if i see something or someplace I might be able to add something I promise I will.

A couple questions,

How old are the Hard Drives you are using?
Are they IDE or SATA?
Other than hearing them spin up when you start your computer, Do they make noise (i.e. clicking)?
Do you have a Hard Drive you can afford to lose eveything on?  If so remove your other Hard Drives install  the one you can afford to sacrifice, and and reformat it and do a clean installof just Windows 7 on it.
